Understanding Arthritis-Joints Related Disorders

Osteoarthritis - Arthritis-Joints Related Disorders

Arthritis-Joints Related Disorders would be a huge topic in itself, but here I would cover two major types of arthritis — Osteoarthritis, which is the “wear and tear” Arthritis, and Rheumatoid Arthritis, an inflammatory type of Arthritis that happens when the Body’s Immune System does not work properly.

Gout, which is caused by Crystals that collect in the Joints, is another common type of Arthritis. There are dozens more such as Psoriatic, Lupus, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Septic… but shall confine ourselves to the most common ones (Osteo-Arthritis & Rheumatoid). Don’t worry, the line of treatment for any of these shall more or less remain same.

Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis (i.e. Degeneration of Joint Cartilages and/or Bones). Osteoarthritis results from overuse of joints but most commonly it is an ageing phenomenon. It can be the consequence of demanding sports where joints may be injured or obesity, which places increased loads on knee joints. Commonly affected parts are End of Fingers, Lower Back, Thumbs, Knees and Hips.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an Autoimmune Disease. That means that the Own Body’s Immune System Attacks the Own Body Tissues. For reasons that aren’t clear, the Joints are the main areas affected by this malfunction in the immune system. Over time, chronic inflammation can lead to severe joint damage and deformities, resulting in Bone Erosion. About one out of every five people who have Rheumatoid Arthritis develop Lumps on their skin called Rheumatoid Nodules. These often develop over Joint Areas that receive pressure, such as over Knuckles, Elbows, or Heels.

In both the types of Arthritis, The Depletion of Synovial Fluid takes place. This Synovial Fluid, reduces the friction between the Joint Cartilages and assists in movement.

From Ayurvedic Perspective: The Main Cause for this condition is Improper Digestion and Body Metabolism (Jatharagni is in state of Mandagni). This coupled by Poor Eating Habits and Lifestyle (Sedentary), leads to accumulation of impurities in the body, (AMA, Layer/s of undigested food particles in the body) which eventually enter the Middle Passageway of the Diseases (The deepest layers of the tissues) and builds up in the joints.

Arthritis-Joints Related Disorders are mostly associated with Vitiation of Vata (The Nerve Force of the body). Please note, there is no pain without the involvement of The Vata Component of The Body. But would reiterate here, that in any ailment, some vitiation of all three Doshas is almost always involved. Arthritis in Ayurveda is also called Amavata (Refer above two paragraphs).

Symptoms: Pain, Joint Inflammations, Joint Stiffness (Lack of flexibility). Understand, as an ailment gets severe, it affects the other body tissues too, and hence many other symptoms crop up. Few more symptoms could be:

  • Inconvenience in Walking-Moving,
  • Fatigue,
  • Weight Loss,
  • Inability to Sleep,
  • Hopelessness, Lack of Appetite etc.
